The Soviet Union dissolved in December 1991 during the leadership of Mikhail Gorbachev. His policies of glasnost (openness) and perestroika (restructuring), combined with economic crisis and rising nationalist movements in republics, led to the peaceful end of the USSR. Gorbachev resigned on December 25, 1991, as the Soviet Union ceased to exist.
