He was the ruler of the Indian Kingdom of Mysore from 1782 (the time of his father's death) until his own demise in 1799. He was the first son of Hyder Ali by his second wife, Fatima or Fakhr-un-nissa.

Tipu Sultan, known as the Tiger of Mysore, ruled the Kingdom of Mysore from 1782 until his death in 1799 during the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War. He was the eldest son of Hyder Ali (by his second wife Fatima Fakhr-un-nissa) and continued his father's resistance against British expansion in southern India.
