Napoleon Bonaparte was born in Ajaccio, Corsica in 1769. Corsica had been acquired by France just the year before (1768), which is why Napoleon is considered French despite being born on an Italian-cultured island. Elba and St. Helena were both places where he was exiled later in life, not his birthplace.
