Ashoka (r. 268-232 BCE), after the brutal Kalinga War, converted to Buddhism and made it the state religion of the Mauryan Empire, actively promoting its teachings through edicts and missionaries. His grandfather Chandragupta Maurya followed Jainism. Samudragupta and Kumaragupta were later rulers who patronized Hinduism and Brahmanical traditions, not Buddhism.
