His grandfather Chandragupta Maurya followed Jainism. Samudragupta and Kumaragupta were later rulers who patronized Hinduism and Brahmanical traditions, not Buddhism.

The term 'Hindu' was first used by the Greeks to refer to the people living beyond the Indus River (which they called 'Indus'). The Persian equivalent 'Sindhu' was adapted by Greeks as 'Indus', and the people were referred to as 'Indoi' or 'Hindu'. This is well-documented in historical accounts of Alexander's invasion and subsequent Greek writings about India.

The Gupta Dynasty (c. 320-550 CE) is called the Golden Age of India due to unprecedented achievements in arts, literature, science, mathematics (Aryabhata, development of zero and decimal system), architecture, and peace and prosperity under rulers like Chandragupta II. The Mauryas preceded them, and the Mughals came much later.
