Mangal Pandey revolted at Barrackpore (not Punjab, Meerut, or Jhansi) on March 29, 1857 by attacking his British sergeant major. This incident is widely considered the first act of what would become the Indian Rebellion of 1857, though Barrackpore is in Bengal (present-day West Bengal).
