Subhash Chandra Bose formed the Indian National Army (Azad Hind Fauj) in 1942-43 in Southeast Asia after escaping house arrest in India. While there was earlier activity with Indian POWs in Malaya, Singapore was the primary location where Bose formally took command and proclaimed the Provisional Government of Free India in 1943.
