The Mahanadi river originates in the Sihava mountains of Chhattisgarh (formerly part of Madhya Pradesh before the state's reorganization in 2000). While it is primarily associated with Odisha (Orissa), its source lies in Chhattisgarh. The river flows east through Odisha before emptying into the Bay of Bengal.

The Yamuna river is a major tributary of the Ganga, and they confluence at Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad), known as the Triveni Sangam. This confluence is considered sacred in Hinduism. The other options (Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri) are major peninsular rivers that flow east but do not join the Ganga at Prayag.
