Emperor Ashoka's son Mahendra (Mahinda) was a Buddhist monk who went to Sri Lanka as a missionary to spread Buddhism. According to the Mahavamsa and Dipavamsa (Sri Lankan chronicles), he lived out his remaining days in Sri Lanka and died there. His mission successfully established Buddhism in the island nation.

M.N. Roy (Manabendra Nath Roy) founded the Communist Party of India in 1925 at Tashkent. He was a prominent Indian revolutionary, philosopher, and political theorist who played a key role in introducing communism to India. A.N. Roy and Arundhati Roy are not the same person - Arundhati Roy is a contemporary writer and activist.
