Statistical data on land use in Karnataka indicates that Ragi occupies approximately 14% of the total cultivable land area in the state.

Sugarcane is a major cash crop in Karnataka, supporting a large sugar industry. It is considered the most important commercial and industrial crop in the state's agricultural economy.

The botanical name of sugar is Saccharum officinarum.

The Southern Maidan region of Karnataka, which includes districts like Tumakuru, Kolar, and Bengaluru, is the primary area for Ragi cultivation.
