Among camels, trypanosomiasis is sometimes also referred to as surra. It is caused by Trypanosoma evansi, present in most areas where camels are found. Surra in camels is usually a chronic wasting disease. Striking clinical symptoms develop a month or so after infection, with acute bouts of fever, associated with dullness, lack of appetite and lacrimation, coinciding with peaks of high parasitaemia. Gradually the animal loses condition, the hump shrinks and progressive weakness becomes noticeable. Oedemas may occur.
