Basically cytoplasm is the substance that fills the cell.It is a jelly like substance and it is made up of eighty percent water and is usually clear and colourless.It is thought that the component molecules and structures of the cytoplasm behave at times like a disordered colloidal solution(sol) and at other times like an integrated network,forming a solid mass (gel).This theory thus proposes that the cytoplasm exists in distinct fluid and solid phases depending on the level of interaction between cytoplasmic components.Cytoplasm also constitutes numerous salts and is a very good conductor of electricity.

The cytoplasm comprises cytosol and the organelles. Organelles are usually membrane bound structures inside the cell that have specific functions. Some major organelles that are suspended in the cytosol are the mitochondria, the endoplasmic reticulum, golgi apparatus, vacuoles, lysosomes and in plant cells chloroplasts.

Kernplasm theory was proposed by O. Hertwig. According to the theory, during the life period of a cell, a constant ratio exist between cytoplasmic and nuclear masses and this maintains equilibrium between the cytoplasm and the nucleus.

Cytoplasm is a gel-like substance present in all cells. All of the cell organelles are suspended in the cytoplasm and perform life sustaining activities and thus cytoplasm is called as living fluid.
