Anthracite: The highest rank of coal. It is a hard, brittle, and black lustrous coal, often referred to as hard coal, containing a high percentage of fixed carbon and a low percentage of volatile matter.

The Jharia coalfield forms a part of the east-west trending Gondwana basins of the Damodar valley in northeastern part of India.

Neyveli in Tamil Nadu is the most significant site for lignite mining in India.
