Underemployment may be defined as “a situation in which the person is capable of working both physically and mentally at the existing wage rate, but does not get a job to work”. Open underemployment is a situation wherein a large section of the labour force does not get a job that may yield them regular income. This type of unemployment can be seen and counted in terms of the number of unemployed persons. The labour force expands at a faster rate than the growth rate of economy. Therefore, all people do not get jobs.

Disguised unemployment exists where part of the labour force is either left without work or is working in a redundant manner where worker's productivity is essentially zero. It is unemployment that does not affect aggregate output. An economy demonstrates disguised unemployment when productivity is low and too many workers are filling too few jobs. It can be observed in rural as well as in urban areas.

Underemployment refers to a job that is insufficient in some important way for a worker, relative to a standard, which results in the under-utilization of the worker. Examples include holding a part-time job despite desiring full-time work, and overqualification, where the employee has education, experience, or skills beyond the requirements of the job.

Disguised unemployment is a kind of unemployment in which there are people who are visibly employed but are actually unemployed. This situation is also known as 'Hidden Unemployment'. In such a situation more people are engaged in a work than required.

Disguised unemployment is primarily traced in the agricultural and the unorganised sectors of the economy. Agriculture provides employment to almost 51% of the total population. However, the sector’s contribution to the country’s GDP is just 12-13%.

Unemployment is a situation of not getting the work and wages with eligible conditions. People are getting education but not getting the jobs is educated unemployment.

The objective of implementing the NREGA 2005 was to provide 100 days of guaranteed employment to those people in rural India who can work, and are in need of work.

Underemployment has been studied from a variety of perspectives, including economics, management, psychology, and sociology. In economics, for example, the term underemployment has three different distinct meanings and applications. All meanings involve a situation in which a person is working, unlike unemployment, where a person who is searching for work cannot find a job. All meanings involve under-utilization of labour which is missed by most official (governmental agency) definitions and measurements of unemployment.

Seasonal unemployment is one of the many types of unemployment. Seasonal unemployment is the unemployment created from seasonal variations in demand for goods and services. In an economy there will be certain times of year when the demand for goods and services are lower than normal.
