Precipitation is the primary mechanism by which water is transferred from the atmosphere back to the Earth's surface.

The process by which moisture is carried through plants from roots to small pores on the underside of leaves, where it changes to vapour and is released to the atmosphere is known as transpiration. 

Prolonged reduction of ground-water supplies can have a devastating effect on a farmer’s crop yields. If a drought occurs soon after seeding, plants may fail to germinate; and during the later stages of development, a drought can cause entire crops to wither.
