Halophiles are organisms that thrive in high salt concentrations. They are also called as salt-loving microorganisms. They are found in hypersaline environments like in arid, coastal, deep‐sea, underground salt mines. They can comfortably live in evaporation ponds or salt lakes such as Great Salt Lake, Owens Lake or Dead Sea. 

Plants that thrive in salty environments, such as sea shore wetlands, are classified as halophytes.

Mangroves possess various root adaptations to survive in waterlogged, anaerobic, and saline soils, including pneumatophores for gas exchange, and stilt/prop roots for structural support.

To maintain osmotic balance in saline environments, mangroves accumulate compatible solutes like proline and sorbitol to lower their internal water potential without toxic salt accumulation.

Halophytes use multiple strategies to survive, including salt excretion through glands, accumulation of organic osmolytes like proline/sorbitol, and water storage in succulent tissues.

Viviparity (seeds germinating while still attached to the parent) and pneumatophores (aerial roots for breathing) are classic adaptations of mangrove species, which are halophytes.

Vivipary is a reproductive adaptation in mangroves that allows seeds to germinate while still on the parent tree, helping them establish quickly in unstable, muddy environments.

The Sunderbans mangroves exhibit all these characteristics: pneumatophores for oxygen, prop roots for stability, and vivipary for successful reproduction in tidal mudflats.

Both Rhizophora and Avicennia are dominant and widely distributed genera in mangrove ecosystems globally.
