Mechanical advantage of a hydraulic press is the ratio of the area of the press cylinder to the area of the pump cylinder. Since Area = pi * r^2, and the radius of the press cylinder (R) is equal to the diameter of the pump cylinder (d = 2r), then R = 2r. The ratio of areas is (pi * R^2) / (pi * r^2) = (2r)^2 / r^2 = 4.

A machine is a device which helps us to lift heavy loads or speed up the motion or change the direction of force in the desired direction. It can be used to obtain a gain in speed or in many more actions.

Any sloping flat surface along which a load can be easily pushed or pulled is called Inclined plane. An inclined plane is a sloping surface behaving like a simple machine and has a mechanical advantage of always greater than 1.

A doorknob functions as a wheel and axle, where turning the larger wheel (knob) creates a mechanical advantage to turn the smaller axle (latch mechanism).
