Article 324, Clauses 1 to 6 of the Indian Constitution deal with the composition of the Election Commission. It is a constitutional body responsible for conducting free and fair elections to various posts in the country. This Article says that the election commission in India shall consist of a Chief Election Commissioner and such other Commissioners as the President may from time to time fix.

When the five-year limit is up, or the legislature has been dissolved and new elections have been called, the Election Commission puts into effect the machinery for holding an election. The Commission normally announces the schedule of elections in a major Press Conference a few weeks before the formal process is set in motion. A separate date for counting is fixed and the results declared for each constituency by the concerned Returning Officer.

The voters list is the list which contains the names and certain other details of the voters. It is also called the Electoral Roll. The Electoral Roll is prepared by the Election Commission much before the elections.Electoral Roll is revised every year. At the time of revision, the names of those who have attained the age of 18 are included and the names of the dead are deleted. The Electoral Roll helps the polling officials to identify the voters.
