The Godavari is the largest river system in peninsular India. It is also known as Vridha Ganga or Dakshina Ganga. Its total length is 1,465  km. The drainage basin area is 3,12,812 sq. km. The source of the river is the Trimbak plateau of North Sayahadri near Nasik in Maharashtra.

The Godavari is the largest river system of the Peninsular India and next only to the Ganga. The river originated from the Brahmachari of Western Ghats at Trismbakeshwar, the district of Nasik in Maharashtra. The total length of the river is 1.,465km. It has a catchment area of 312,812sq km. It covers an area of 48.6% of Maharashtra and total one tenth of India. In it course it falls in Bay of Bengal and forms a large delta.

Godavari is the largest river in peninsular india and second largest river in India. The river divides itself into two main stream, the Gautami on the east and the Badhiya Godavari on the west and forms a large size delta before pours into the Bay of Bengal. The river meets Bay of Bengal in Antarvedi,it's a small interior village in Andhera Prabesh. This place has tourist attraction and locally known as Dakshina kashi.

First dam built on the river Godavari is at Gangapur. It is located in the Nasik district of Maharashtra. The length of the dam is 3,902m and height is 36.59m. The dam opened in the year 1965. The total surface area of the dam is 22,860 sq km. Irrigation is one of the import purpose of the dam.

There is a bridge at Rajahamudry on Godavari river,  which is the Asia's third longest bridge. The total length of the bridge is 4.1 km. It is opened in the year 16 August 1974. It has railway line below and road line above and vehicles can move on the bridge at  a time.

It is a species of fish related to the herring, in the Clupeidae family. It is a very popular and sought-after food fish in South Asia. It is also known as Hilsa in Bengal.  The name Pulasa as it is called in Andhra Pradesh stays with the fish for a limited period between July-Sept of a year, when floods(muddy)water flow in Godavari River.
