World Geography and Capitals

Harare has been the capital of Zimbabwe since 1982, when the country changed its name from Rhodesia to Zimbabwe following independence. It is the largest city and the country's administrative, commercial, and communications center.

Islamabad became the capital of Pakistan in 1967, replacing Karachi which was the original capital. It was built as a planned city to serve as the political center, while Karachi remains the largest city and economic hub.

Tegucigalpa is the capital and largest city of Honduras, located in the southern highlands. It has served as the political center since the country's independence and forms part of the Central District with its twin city Comayaguela.

Niamey has been the capital of Niger since 1926 during French colonial rule. It is located in the western part of the country on the Niger River and is the largest city and administrative center.

Maputo is the capital and largest city of Mozambique, located on the Indian Ocean coast. It was known as Lourenço Marques during Portuguese colonial rule and retained its status as capital after independence in 1975.

Bogota is the capital and largest city of Colombia, located in the Andes mountains at 2,640 meters above sea level. It is the country's political, economic, and cultural center, housing the government and main institutions.

Yerevan is the capital and largest city of Armenia, and one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities. It has served as the capital since 1918 and is the country's political, cultural, and economic center.

Phnom Penh is the capital and largest city of Cambodia, located at the confluence of the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers. It has been the political center since French colonial administration and is the country's economic and cultural heart.

N'Djamena is the capital and largest city of Chad, located at the confluence of the Chari and Logone rivers. It was called Fort-Lamy during French colonial rule and renamed N'Djamena after independence in 1973.

Valletta is the capital of Malta, located on the main island's east coast. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its fortifications and Baroque architecture, and has been the capital since the 16th century.

Belgrade is the capital and largest city of Serbia, located at the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers. It is one of Europe's oldest capitals and has been the political center through various historical periods and state formations.

Both Bangkok (Thailand) and Alleppey (India) are legitimately called 'Venice of the East' due to their extensive canal networks and waterways. Bangkok's khlongs (canals) earned it this nickname historically, while Alleppey in Kerala is known for its backwaters and canals. Guinea Coast and Pamir are not associated with this epithet.

Tallahassee has been the capital of Florida since 1824, chosen for its strategic location between the state's two largest cities at the time (St. Augustine and Pensacola). Orlando and Miami are major Florida cities but are not the capital. Tampa is also a significant city but not the capital.

The World Bank's Paris office, established in 1947, is the oldest continuously functioning country office. Tokyo, Bonn, and New Delhi offices were established later. Paris serves as a key European operational center.

Tokyo is Japan's capital city and is located on Honshu, the largest and most populous island of Japan. While the phrasing 'Capital of Honshu' is slightly awkward (Tokyo is the capital of Japan, not specifically of Honshu island), the intended meaning is clear. Nagoya, Osaka, and Kobe are major cities on Honshu but none serve as Japan's capital.
