Textile and Fiber Materials

A fabric finish is any process performed on yarn or fabric after weaving or knitting to improve its appearance, hand (feel), or functional performance.

Fiberglass is a material made from extremely fine glass fibers. It is lightweight, does not stretch or shrink, is fire resistant, and is often used in industrial or construction applications.

Olefin (polypropylene) is widely used in carpets and car interiors due to its excellent stain resistance, colorfastness, and durability. Fiberglass is typically used for insulation or structural composites, while bamboo and rayon are cellulosic fibers with different performance profiles.

Acrylic is a synthetic fiber engineered to mimic the warmth and texture of wool. While it is lightweight and washable, it is well known for being prone to static electricity and pilling.

Spandex is a synthetic fiber known for its exceptional elasticity and ability to retain its shape. It is always used in filament form and is sensitive to high heat, which can cause it to melt.

Acetate is a manufactured cellulosic fiber that provides a silk-like appearance and drape at a lower cost. It is generally delicate, has low abrasion resistance, and typically requires dry cleaning.

Rayon was the first manufactured fiber, created from regenerated cellulose (wood pulp). It is often referred to as artificial silk or cotton, and it is known for being comfortable but prone to shrinking and wrinkling.

Polyester is the most widely used synthetic fiber in the world. It is valued for its high strength, resistance to abrasion, and ability to be produced in various cross-sectional shapes, including the smooth, rod-like shape common in textile production.

Bamboo fiber is derived from bamboo pulp and is marketed for its soft hand, luster, and moisture-wicking capabilities. It is frequently blended with other fibers to improve fabric performance.

Linen is one of the oldest textile fibers, derived from the flax plant. It is highly valued for summer wear due to its breathability and strength, though it is notorious for wrinkling easily.

Silk is a natural protein filament fiber produced by silkworms. It is prized for its luxurious hand and drape, but it is sensitive to UV light, which can cause it to degrade over time.

Wool is a protein fiber obtained from sheep and other animals. It is naturally fire-retardant, resilient, and durable, but it can mat when exposed to heat and moisture.

Cotton is a seed fiber and the most widely used natural fiber in the world. It is relatively inexpensive and offers good strength and abrasion resistance, making it a staple for apparel and home textiles.
