  4. puriefies

Reveal answer Fill a bubble to check yourself
C Correct answer
Explanation

The misspelled word 'pureifys' should be corrected to 'purifies' - the third person singular form of the verb 'purify.' For verbs ending in consonant + y, change y to i and add -es. 'Purefies' and 'puriefies' don't follow this rule, and 'purifyies' incorrectly keeps the y.

Multiple choice
  1. stay with

  2. together

  3. as friends

  4. immovably

Reveal answer Fill a bubble to check yourself
B Correct answer
Explanation

'Hand in hand' is an idiom meaning things that are connected or occur together. In this context, it means the hydrosphere and life are inseparably linked. 'Together' captures this meaning of close association. 'Stay with' is too literal, 'as friends' anthropomorphizes incorrectly, and 'immovably' means fixed in place.

Multiple choice
  1. hydrosphere

  2. earth's environment

  3. water cycle

  4. running water

Reveal answer Fill a bubble to check yourself
C Correct answer
Explanation

The pronoun 'It' in sentence (5) refers to the nearest appropriate singular noun antecedent. The water cycle is the subject that 'supplies usable water to living things on land.' The hydrosphere is the broader system, while 'water cycle' is the specific active process described in this sentence.

Multiple choice
  1. supplies to

  2. maintains

  3. traps in

  4. consists of

Reveal answer Fill a bubble to check yourself
D Correct answer
Explanation

The sentence states the hydrosphere 'includes' water inside plants and animals. In this context, 'consists of' means 'contains or comprises' - the same meaning. 'Supplies to' suggests giving, 'maintains' means keeps in operation, and 'traps in' means confines - none of which match the meaning of 'includes' as containing.

Multiple choice
  1. adding on to

  2. pushing out

  3. cutting away

  4. getting rid of

Reveal answer Fill a bubble to check yourself
D Correct answer
Explanation

The water cycle purifies by 'removing' pollutants. 'Getting rid of' is an exact synonym for eliminating or removing something unwanted. 'Adding on to' is the opposite, 'pushing out' is too physical, and 'cutting away' suggests physical removal rather than general elimination.

Multiple choice
  1. fantastic

  2. hypothetical

  3. real

  4. unusual

Reveal answer Fill a bubble to check yourself
B Correct answer
Explanation

The hydrosphere is a conceptual sphere used in earth science to classify all water on Earth. It's called 'imaginary' because it's not a physical object you can touch, but a scientific classification system. Hypothetical best captures this meaning of something that exists as a concept or model rather than a tangible entity.

Multiple choice
  1. fixing

  2. converting

  3. rotating

  4. leading

Reveal answer Fill a bubble to check yourself
B Correct answer
Explanation

The passage discusses how the water cycle transforms saltwater into freshwater. Converting means changing from one form, state, or function to another, which perfectly describes the transformation of saltwater to fresh water through evaporation and precipitation. The other options don't capture this transformative process.

Multiple choice
  1. racing

  2. functional

  3. successful

  4. static

Reveal answer Fill a bubble to check yourself
B Correct answer
Explanation

An 'active' hydrosphere means one with a functioning, operating water cycle. In this context, 'running' describes a water cycle that is working properly and continuously. Functional means serving its intended purpose or operating as expected, which best fits the meaning of a properly functioning water cycle.
