"I messages" are usually about

Directions: Read the passage given below and answer the question that follows by selecting the most appropriate option.
1.       Some researchers suggest that emotional intelligence can be leaned and strengthened, while others claim it is an inborn characteristic. The purpose for developing our emotional literacy is to precisely identify and communicate our feelings. When we do this we are helping nature fulfill its design for our feelings. We must know how we feel in order to be able to fill our emotional needs. And we must communicate our feelings in order to get the emotional support and understanding we need from others, as well as to show our emotional support and understanding to them.
2.         Also, one of the first steps to developing our emotional intelligence is to improve our emotional literacy. In other words, to improve our ability to identify our feelings by their specific names -, and the more specific we can be, the better. In the English language we have thousands of words which describe and identify our emotions, we just don't use many of them. If you are interested in working on your emotional literacy, the first step is to start using simple, three word sentences such as these : I feel sad. I feel motivated. I feel offended. I feel appreciated. I feel hurt. I feel disrespected. When we talk about our feelings using three word sentences we are sending what have been called "I messages". On the other hand, when we say things like ''You make me so jealous" we are sending a "you message". These "you messages" typically put the other person on the defensive, which hurts communication and relationships rather than helping.

  1. others' business, i.e. 'gossip'

  2. expressing your views freely

  3. blaming others

  4. blaming yourself

Reveal answer Fill a bubble to check yourself
B Correct answer
Explanation

The passage explains that 'I messages' are simple three-word sentences like 'I feel sad, I feel motivated, I feel offended.' These are about expressing your own feelings and views directly and honestly. The passage contrasts these with 'you messages' which blame others. Option B correctly identifies that 'I messages' are about expressing your views freely. Option A (gossip) is incorrect. Option C (blaming others) describes 'you messages', not 'I messages'. Option D (blaming yourself) isn't mentioned.

Multiple choice
  1. turning cool

  2. very windy and dusty

  3. dusty and cold

  4. chilly and windy

Reveal answer Fill a bubble to check yourself
D Correct answer
Explanation

The phrase 'blanketed chill' uses 'blanketed' as an adjective describing 'chill'. In the context, we have 'unseasonal winds and blanketed chill' - two weather conditions. 'Blanketed' suggests something covering or spreading widely. The chill was covering the area like a blanket. Combined with winds mentioned in the same phrase, the weather was both windy and chilly. Option D captures both elements. Option A is vague. Option B doesn't mention the cold. Option C is plausible but 'blanketed' doesn't specifically mean dusty.

Multiple choice
  1. a fellow angel after he died in the accident

  2. a good samaritan among the pedestrians

  3. seeing an angel as he was confused after being hit

  4. his colleagues walking past who would help him

Reveal answer Fill a bubble to check yourself
B Correct answer
Explanation

After being hit by a bus and falling to the curb, the narrator looks for 'an angel on the concrete surface' with tear-stained eyes. In this context, he's hoping someone will help him up. An 'angel' is metaphorically used for someone who shows kindness and helps someone in need. A 'good samaritan' is exactly this - a person who helps a stranger in need. The other options don't fit: Option A is literal and incorrect. Option C suggests confusion/hallucination. Option D is too specific about colleagues.

  2. large buildings for residents on that street

  3. buildings that entrap the human spirit

  4. tall buildings without windows that are secure

Reveal answer Fill a bubble to check yourself
A Correct answer
Explanation

'Sky-gripping fortresses' is a metaphorical description. 'Sky-gripping' suggests very tall buildings that seem to grip or touch the sky. 'Fortresses' suggests large, imposing structures. Together, this describes tall, imposing buildings. The passage mentions 'financial district', which typically has tall commercial buildings. Option A correctly identifies these as 'tall buildings for commercial use'. Options B and C introduce details not in the text. Option D is too specific and negative.

  1. was very light for his size

  2. was fat but light-footed

  3. was fat and clumsy

  4. was light and agile

Reveal answer Fill a bubble to check yourself
C Correct answer
Explanation

The narrator says his bag 'felt heavier on my shoulder than ever before' and then 'dreamed of days when I, too, was lighter.' This contrast between feeling heavy now and dreaming of being lighter suggests he was fat in the past. If someone is fat, they literally weigh more. When he says he dreamed of being 'lighter', he means physically lighter (less weight). The context implies he was fat and clumsy (the heaviness of the bag and himself made his journey difficult). Option C captures this: 'was fat and clumsy'.

  2. was injured in the fall and needed help

  3. was treated with indifference by the society

  4. was thrown high and far after the vehicle hit him

Reveal answer Fill a bubble to check yourself
B Correct answer
Explanation

The phrase 'carelessly littered me down' appears in a passage where the narrator describes being knocked down by a bus. The context shows the narrator was 'bruised and filthy' and had to 'push myself up' from the curb, indicating physical injury from the fall. Option B correctly identifies that the subject was injured and needed help getting up.

The monkey was wondering why the crocodile was late that day and when he saw the crocodile he asked, Why, my friend, why are you so late? Did you meet with an accident on the way?
No accident, said the crocodile.  My wife and I had a quarrel. She said that I was not your friend. You have done so much for us, yet I have not invited you home. She has asked me to take you home today. She wants to meet you.
How sweet of her to ask me home, said the monkey. I would also like to meet her. But how can I go there? You live in water and I shall be drowned if I try to get to your home.
We live on the river bank, said the crocodile. I can easily take you there. You can ride on my back while I swim.
The monkey thought it was a good idea. He felt happy that he had such good friend.
The monkey and the crocodile set out for the home of the crocodile. The monkey sat on the crocodile's back and the crocodile started swimming up the river. When they reached the middle of the river, the crocodile began to dive. The monkey was frightened. Hey, he cried. What are you doing? I shall be drowned if you go down any further.

C Correct answer
Explanation

The options (2) and (4) are absurd as they have no mention in the passage. Options (1) and (3) seem to be correct but the passage, clearly, gives example that the choice was between killing his friend and allowing his wife to die.
