Pollution and Human Impact

Non-point source pollution comes from many diffuse sources, such as runoff from farms or city streets, making it difficult to trace to a single pipe or location.

Point source pollution is pollution that can be traced to a single, identifiable source, such as a pipe discharging waste from a factory.

Minamata disease is a neurological syndrome caused by severe mercury poisoning. It was first discovered in Minamata, Japan, where industrial wastewater containing methylmercury was dumped into the bay and accumulated in fish.

The James Bay Project in Quebec, Canada, involved massive hydroelectric development. The flooding of large areas led to the release of mercury from soil into the water, which contaminated fish and impacted local indigenous communities.

Light pollution is primarily caused by the inefficient use of artificial light, specifically light that is directed upwards or sideways rather than being shielded and directed toward the ground where it is needed.

Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies very often by human activities.

Pollutants which are slowly degradable remain in the environment in an unchanged form for many decades. For example, substances such as dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), plastic materials, heavy metals, many chemicals, and nuclear wastes etc., once released into the environment are difficult to remove. These pollutants cannot be degraded by natural processes and are harmful to living organisms. Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies (e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and groundwater). Agricultural discharges, sewage and other wastes and industrial effluents all cause water pollution.
