Luc Montagnier and Françoise Barré-Sinoussi were awarded the Nobel Prize in 2008 for discovering HIV. They first isolated the virus at the Pasteur Institute in France in 1983. This was a landmark discovery in virology that led to better understanding and treatment of AIDS.
