In the 2001 Census of India, West Bengal was recorded as the state with the highest population density, with 903 persons per square kilometer. Bihar overtook West Bengal in the subsequent 2011 census.

The Northern Railway zone serves the highest number of states and union territories, including Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. It is headquartered in New Delhi and is one of the largest zones in terms of network coverage. Other zones like Western or Southern cover fewer distinct states.

Odisha (Orissa) accounts for nearly 93% of India's nickel ore resources, primarily located in the Sukinda valley of Jajpur district. Other states have negligible or no significant commercial deposits, making it the primary source for the country.

In the 2001 Census of India, Nagaland recorded the highest decadal population growth rate among all states at approximately 64.53 percent. This was a significant outlier compared to the national average and other states like Sikkim or Manipur. Interestingly, Nagaland later recorded negative growth in the 2011 census.

Based on the Central Statistical Organization (CSO) data for the mid-2000s at 1999-2000 constant prices, Chandigarh recorded the highest per capita income. This reflects the high economic productivity and standard of living in the Union Territory. Other regions like Delhi and Goa also rank high but were behind Chandigarh in this specific statistical set.

Uttar Pradesh has the maximum number of Rajya Sabha seats (31) because Rajya Sabha representation is allocated based on population. Being India's most populous state, it gets the most seats.
