Indian Government Organisations and Roles

The Commission for Center-State Relations (Sarkaria Commission) was appointed by the government in 1983 to examine center-state relations, but it was NOT a constitutionally mandated body - it was an administrative commission. The Election Commission (Article 324), National SC/ST Commission (Article 338), and Planning Commission were all constitutional or statutory bodies. Note: the Planning Commission was replaced by NITI Aayog in 2015.

Indian Railways is the largest public sector undertaking in India by employment (over 1.3 million employees) and infrastructure. BHEL, NTPC, and GAIL are major PSUs but smaller in scale than Railways.

The National Development Council (NDC) is the highest body that approves Five Year Plans in India.
