Under the globalization, particularly after 1990 farmers in India have been exposed to new challenges.

According to 2011 Agricultural Census of India, an estimated 61.5% of the 1300 million Indian population is rural and dependent on agriculture. The number of farming households is 159.6 million.

Sugarcane is a member of the grass family and is a tall tropical variety with a hard, thick stem which grows to a height of 3.5 m or more. Sugar is stored in the stem. India has the world's largest area under sugarcane. India stands next only to Brazil in the production of sugarcane and accounts for nearly one-fifth of the world cane production.

The share of agriculture in India's GDP has declined over time and is currently around 15-20%, but historically or in specific contexts, 30% is often cited in older textbooks.

While the share fluctuates, 10% is a commonly accepted figure in recent economic data for the primary sector's contribution to GDP in many contexts.

Tamil Nadu stands fourth in cement production. It accounts for 10% of the country's cement production.

Thiruppur alone contributes 70% of export of knitwear of Tamil Nadu. At present, all-India market share of Tirupur in knitwear exports is 44.29 per cent and this would go up once the industry starts exporting synthetic-based garments, which have a market throughout the year globally. 

Tamil Nadu contributes nearly 25% of India's share in the export of cotton, yarns and fabric. Tamil Nadu is the largest textile hub of India. About half of India's total spinning mill capacity is in Tamil Nadu. The western part of Tamil Nadu comprising Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode, Dindigul and Karur has the majority of spinning mills manufacturing cotton, polyester, blended yarn, open end yarn and silk yarn, etc.

Tamil Nadu produces about 12% of the paper in India. Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited was promoted by the Government of Tamil Nadu in the year 1979 to produce Newsprint and Printing & Writing Paper using bagasse as the primary raw material. The current demand is estimated at 13.88 million tons with domestic production of 12.15 million tons, export of 0.60 million tons and import of 2.33 million tons. India is the fastest growing market for paper in the world with an overall growth rate of about 6% per year.

Chennai city is the base for 30% of India's automobile industry and 35% of its auto components. This industrial supremacy has resulted in Chennai being known as the "Detroit of Southern Asia."

Tamil Nadu earns 8% of its GDP from automobile industry.

Per capita consumption of steel is nothing but the quantity of steel utilized by a person. India is 9th among the world crude steel producers and produces 32.8 million tons of steel. India is the largest producer of sponge iron. But per capita consumption of steel is only 32 kg per annum.

The service sector has become a major contributor to India's exports, accounting for approximately 35% of total exports in recent years.

In March, 2014 there were over 93000 'primary agricultural credit societies' (PACS) covering 98% of villages in India.
PACS provides institutional credit which assists rural households involved in agricultural activities.Credit helps to increase the productive capacity of the economy.
