Hindu Deities and Epics

The Dashavatara Temple of Deogarh is an early 6th century Hindu temple built in the Gupta Period, showing the Gupta style architecture. Even though the temple was dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva was also represented as a Yogi in one of the temple sculptures.

The worship of trees was widespread during the Indus Valley Civilization. The Peepal tree was considered most sacred. One of the seals shows a God standing between the branches of a Peepal tree and the God was being worshipped by a devotee on his knees. The discovery of a large number of seals with Peepal trees engraved on them also suggests that this tree was considered sacred to the people of Indus Valley Civilization.

The Trimurti (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva) is a later concept in Hinduism and was not part of the religious practices of the Indus Valley people.

The worship of the Mother Goddess is well-documented through numerous terracotta figurines found at various Harappan sites.

A seal referred to as Pashupati Seal found in Mohenjo-daro depicts a central human figure surrounded by four wild animals, an elephant and tiger on one side and a rhinoceros and a buffalo on the other side. Below the dais are two deer. He is believed to be the central deity and presumed to be earlier depiction of Lord Shiva.

The royal emblem of the Vijayanagara Empire was the Varaha, representing the wild boar, which was an avatar of Lord Vishnu.

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is a Bengal-based saint and spiritual leader of the Bhakti movement who popularized the devotion to Lord Krishna. He popularized Vaishnava Bhakti by preaching the Bhagavad Gita and Bhagavata Purana. As a preacher, he spent a lot of time travelling throughout the country spreading the message of Krishna Bhakti. He is also considered as an important personality responsible for the beginning of the 'Hare Krishna' cult. 

The twelve Alwars were devotees of Lord Vishnu. They were from South India. The were amongst the first to start the Bhakti cult in South India.

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu belonged to Mahagaudiya Sect. He was born in Bengal. He popularised Krishna cult that is the worship of Lord Krishna. He believed that through love, dance, and songs one can feel the presence of God.

This shloka is a traditional prayer expressing gratitude to the Guru, equating the teacher with the divine trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwara.

The river known as the Indus was historically referred to as the Sindhu in Sanskrit.

The Dashavatara Temple in Deogarh features a famous relief of Vishnu reclining on the serpent Shesha, known as Sheshashayi Vishnu.

According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati is the mother of Lord Ganesha.

Lord Krishna is the eighth avatar (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu in Hindu theology. According to tradition, Vishnu descends to Earth whenever dharma is threatened, and Krishna is one of his most important incarnations.
