England was Cricket World Cup runner-up three times before finally winning in 2019: they lost the finals to the West Indies in 1979, to Australia in 1987, and to Pakistan in 1992. Their dramatic victory at Lord's in 2019 finally ended this decades-long runner-up streak.

Roger Binny made his ODI debut for India in 1980. He was a key member of India's 1983 World Cup winning team and was known for his medium-pace bowling.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2009 was originally scheduled for 2008 but was postponed due to security concerns and other scheduling issues. The tournament was eventually held in 2009 in South Africa.

The 2002 ICC Champions Trophy final between India and Sri Lanka was abandoned due to rain in Sri Lanka. Since there was no reserve day and both teams had reached the final, the ICC declared both teams as joint winners of the tournament. This was a unique situation where the trophy was shared between the two finalists. The match was scheduled to be played in Colombo but persistent rain made any play impossible, leading to this unprecedented shared title.

South Africa won the inaugural ICC Champions Trophy in 1998, defeating West Indies in the final. This tournament was then called the ICC Knock Out Trophy. India won it in 2002 (jointly with Sri Lanka), Australia won in 2006 and 2009.

Anil Kumble made his Test debut against England in 1990 at Manchester. This match marked the beginning of his legendary Test cricket career. Australia was his opponent in his final Test, but not his first.
