Certain extremophiles, particularly tardigrades (water bears), can survive in the vacuum and radiation of space for years. They enter a cryptobiotic state called a 'tun' where metabolism nearly stops. Experiments on the International Space Station and outside spacecraft have confirmed this ability. Other microorganisms like certain bacteria and fungi also show remarkable space-hardiness.
