The Rosetta Stone, discovered in 1799 by French soldiers near Rosetta (Rashid), Egypt, was the key to deciphering hieroglyphs. It contained the same text in three scripts: Hieroglyphic Egyptian, Demotic Egyptian, and Ancient Greek. Since scholars could read Ancient Greek, Jean-François Champollion used it to crack the hieroglyphic code in 1822.
