Fort William was built in Calcutta after the Battle of Plassey (1757) to secure British control over Bengal. This fortification became the center of British military and political power in eastern India. The Battle of Plassey, where Robert Clive defeated Siraj-ud-Daulah, marked the beginning of formal British rule in India, and Fort William symbolized this new authority.
