Vicksburg, Mississippi earned this nickname during the American Civil War due to its strategic fortress-like position on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. Like Gibraltar (the British territory at the entrance to the Mediterranean), Vicksburg controlled a vital waterway and was heavily fortified, making it extremely difficult for Union forces to capture.
