Aberdeen, Scotland is known as 'The Granite City' because many of its historic buildings were constructed from local grey granite. This gives the city a distinctive appearance, especially when the granite sparkles in the rain (leading to the saying 'silver city with the golden sands'). Neither Chicago, Boston, nor Dallas have this granite-based nickname.
