A.O. Hume
Vyomesh Chandra Banerjee (also spelled Womesh Chunder Bonnerjee) was the first president of the Indian National Congress in 1885. He was a prominent barrister from Calcutta. A.O. Hume was the founder and organizer of Congress, Dadabhai Naoroji became president later (1886, 1893, 1906), and Surendranath Banerjee was a different leader who led the Indian Association but was not the first Congress president.
Womesh Chandra (Vyomeshchandra) Bonnerjee, a barrister, was elected as the first president of the Indian National Congress when it was founded in Bombay in December 1885. Surendranath Banerjee was a contemporary nationalist leader but never INC president in its founding year — he joined and later led it in subsequent sessions. Dadabhai Naoroji was a founding figure and later became INC president (1886, 1893, 1906) but not the very first. A.O. Hume, a retired British civil servant, was the key organizer and founder behind the INC's creation but served as General Secretary, not president. So Bonnerjee holds the distinction of being the inaugural president.
