Rajkumari Amrit Kaur served as the first female cabinet minister in independent India, holding the Health portfolio in Nehru's first cabinet from 1947-1957. Sarojini Naidu was the first woman governor (U.P.), Vijayalakshmi Pandit was a diplomat, and Sucheta Kriplani became India's first woman Chief Minister later in 1963. Princess Amrit Kaur was the only woman minister in Nehru's first cabinet.
Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, a senior Congress leader and disciple of Gandhi, served as the Health Minister in Jawaharlal Nehru's first cabinet after independence, and was notably older than most of her cabinet colleagues. The other women listed were also prominent leaders of the era but did not hold this cabinet post at that time.
