The British East India Company was a joint-stock company that established a monopoly on trade in the region and gradually assumed administrative and military control over much of India. Following the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the British Crown took direct control of India, ending the company's rule. The other companies listed are either fictional or did not play this role in India.
