Achilles was born to the mortal King Peleus of Phthia and the sea nymph Thetis. Thetis dipped the infant Achilles in the River Styx to make him immortal, holding him by his heel, which became his only vulnerable spot.
Achilles was the son of Peleus, a mortal king of the Myrmidons, and Thetis, a sea goddess — their union (and the snub of not inviting the goddess Eris to their wedding) is the mythological root of the whole Trojan War, since Eris's golden apple set off the beauty contest between Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite. Agamemnon and Clytemnestra were the rulers of Mycenae, parents of Iphigenia and Orestes, not Achilles. Priam and Hecuba were the king and queen of Troy, parents of Hector and Paris instead.
