The earliest telescopes, known as spyglasses, were invented in the Netherlands in 1608 and were immediately used for practical terrestrial purposes, such as maritime navigation by sailors. Galileo Galilei was the first to use the instrument for astronomical observations, but he was not the first person to look through one.
