Forks were uncommon in America until after the Civil War (1860s), though they had been used in Europe for centuries. Most Americans ate with spoons and knives, or their fingers, until the late 19th century when forks gained popularity through cultural influence from Europe. Chopsticks have never been common dining utensils in mainstream American cuisine.
