Jaipur is known as the 'Pink City' because in 1876, Maharaja Ram Singh had the entire old city painted pink (terracotta color) to welcome the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII). Pink was traditionally the color of hospitality in Rajput culture. The distinctive color has been maintained through law and tradition, making Jaipur instantly recognizable.
