The platypus is a monotreme (egg-laying mammal) unique to Australia and one of only five monotreme species worldwide. Orangutans, seals, and bats are all placental mammals with live birth. The platypus's reproductive strategy (egg-laying), along with its duck-like bill and webbed feet, makes it fundamentally different from the other three. This is a clear biological distinction.
