Lakshadweep islands are coral atolls formed by coral deposition in the Arabian Sea. Unlike the Andaman and Nicobar islands which are volcanic/oceanic islands, Lakshadweep consists exclusively of coral formations. The name itself means 'hundred thousand islands' in Malayalam, referring to these coral formations.
