‘A’ beats his wife. She fell down and became unconscious. Believing her to be dead and to save himself from being arrested for murder A hanged her on the fan with rope. Post mortem report disclosed her heath from hanging. A is liable for:

A committed culpable homicide, not murder. Although A intended to kill (moral culpability is high), the medical cause of death was hanging, not the beating. The act of hanging was done with the belief that she was already dead, so A did not intend to cause death by hanging. Section 299 IPC defines culpable homicide as causing death with intent or knowledge, but without the 'extreme depravity' required for murder under Section 300. Since the wife was alive before hanging and died from it, A is liable for culpable homicide, not murder.
