Cambodia gained independence from France on November 9, 1953, after nearly a century of French colonial rule as part of French Indochina. This came after negotiations led by King Norodom Sihanouk, making Cambodia one of the first Indochinese countries to achieve independence from France, ahead of Vietnam and Laos.
