Kirkpatrick Macmillan is credited with inventing the first bicycle in 1839, adding pedals and cranks to an earlier hobby-horse design. This created the first mechanically-propelled two-wheeled vehicle. Leo Baekeland invented plastic, Karl Benz the automobile, and Torricelli the barometer - none are associated with bicycles.
