Zanzibar (an archipelago off the coast of Tanzania) is historically known as the 'Islands of Cloves' or 'Spice Islands' because it was the world's largest producer of cloves in the 19th century. The clove trade was central to Zanzibar's economy and history. New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Cuba are not known as Islands of Cloves.
