Joseph Priestley discovered oxygen in 1774 through his experiments with mercuric oxide. Although Carl Wilhelm Scheele had likely produced oxygen earlier (1771-1772), Priestley published his findings first and is widely credited as one of oxygen's discoverers, alongside Scheele and Lavoisier who named it.
