Joseph Priestley discovered oxygen in 1774 by heating mercuric oxide and collecting the gas produced, which he called 'dephlogisticated air'. He observed that candles burned brighter in this gas. While Scheele independently discovered oxygen around 1772, Priestley published first and is credited with the discovery.
